ABOUT ME

Artist Statement

My art practice mainly involves intaglio printmaking and also comprises sculpture and ceramics. My intention of making artwork often develops in diverse ways, driven by different kinds of sensory perceptions and working approaches. I do not have a fixed style preference, whether abstract or figurative. However, the idea of connecting my inner subconscious emotions with the outer world through art-making is the goal in all my creations.

Working stage by stage, I keep mediating different working approaches by combining them into one, capturing and communicating inner emotions or feelings instinctively according to past personal or peer experiences (via direct or indirect interactions). I also respond to sensory perceptions (received consciously and unconsciously). The final visual outcome may be associated with a certain spectacle, scene or landscape.

The modern generation receives too much information and negative emotions that require filtering. In my point of view, making art is a way to calm myself back to serenity and release myself from repressed negative sentiments. In art-making, 'catharsis' is defined as a process of purging repressed sentiments, and can be regarded as expressive art therapy. I have found that self art therapy exists in most of my art-making processes. An example would be my carved non-figurative sculpture work, which I also intend to apply in intaglio printing practice. As etching and carving are both time consuming processes that require meticulous technique, by carefully applying an artist's touch and refining in-depth visual presentation, I believe the resulting narrative image can express conceptual content, which may provide room for the audience to contemplate, and thus develop their own interpretations.
